Safety & Durability
What exactly are Happy Planet bags made of?
No secrets here! Our bags are crafted from a clever blend of plant-based materials like cornstarch and certified compostable polymers. Meet the ultimate eco-friendly duo: PLA and PBAT! Think of PLA as the "stiff backbone" made from cornstarch that keeps the bag from turning into a mushy puddle, while PBAT is the "stretchy muscle" that keeps it from snapping when you stuff it with leftovers. Together, they form a tough, flexible superhero team that keeps your snacks fresh, but safely decomposes when you're done, leaving zero microplastics behind. They have the same satisfying "zip" and durability as the bags you’re used to, but they’re designed to return to the dirt instead of sticking around for centuries.
Are these bags reusable?
While they are designed for single-use convenience, they’re surprisingly tough! If you’ve just stored some dry crackers or a handful of nuts, feel free to give it a quick shake and use it again. Once things get messy or the seal starts to get tired, it’s time for its "dirt nap."
What can I put in them?
If you can snack on it, you can bag it. They are perfect for sandwiches, fruit, snacks, or even non-food items like keeping small cables organized or protecting a phone during a drizzly outdoor adventure.
Why are there animals on Happy Planet bags?
At Happy Planet, our mission is to keep plastics out of our landfills and oceans to protect the incredible creatures that call this planet home. We chose to feature a different marine friend on each bag size as a fun, visual reminder of exactly who you are helping by choosing compostable alternatives!
It’s our way of bringing a little bit of the wild into your kitchen and making sustainable choices easy (and adorable) for the whole family.

Storage and shelf-life?
Because home-compostable bags have a limited life-span, we suggest that you store in a cool, dry place. If stored properly, these bags have a shelf-life of about 2 years from date of manufacture.
Why does Home-Compostable matter?
Plastic can remain on earth for 1000 years. Industrial-Compostable bags require special facilities to break down, or they may remain in landfills for decades. Home-Compostable Happy Planet bags are made from materials that can disappear within 3 to 6 months. These bags are made from food-grade, plant-based PBAT + PLA.
